What is an anointing oil? Anointing is the practice of pouring, sprinkling, or smearing the head or body with sacred essential oils. This has been practiced throughout history and across many cultures.
History of Anointing Oils
In ancient Egypt, priests used anointing oils in temple rituals and embalming. In Hinduism, sandalwood and jasmine oils are often used for devotional purposes. In Judaism and Christianity, anointing has been used for spiritual protection and to honor priests and kings.
Specific Anointing Oils
Native Americans and indigenous peoples in Africa also use anointing oils for establishing a connection with the divine and warding off negative influences. Oils used across multiple traditions include sage, frankincense, myrrh, cedarwood, sandalwood, rose, and lavender.

Holy Anointing Oils in Christianity
Holy anointing oils are sacred blends of essential oils and aromatic spices used for spiritual, ceremonial, and healing purposes. In the Old Testament, God commanded Moses to create a holy anointing oil using myrrh, cinnamon, calamus, cassia, and olive oil (Exodus 30:22-25).
This consecrated oil was used to anoint priests, kings, and sacred objects, symbolizing God’s presence, protection, and purification. Anointing oils were believed to carry divine power, marking individuals as chosen or blessed.
In addition to religious rituals, these oils were used for physical healing, with ingredients known for their antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Jesus’ followers continued this practice, using anointing oils in prayers for the sick (Mark 6:13).
